Here are some pictures I took on a recent road trip to California’s Eastern Sierra. The trip started in Stockton, California, going east on CA Highway 120 to US Highway 395 ending in Bishop, California. The return trip was on CA Highway 108 over the Sonora Pass to Stockton. Stops and picture taking included Obsidian Dome near Mammoth Lakes, Owens River Valley, Bishop Creek Canyon, and the eastern slope of CA HWY 108. Most of the pictures were taken in Inyo and Mono Counties. For me, it’s always a delight and joy to see the brilliant fall colors in the Eastern Sierra.

I enjoyed the road trip to see the awesome colors of autumn almost every year.

Here are four pictures I took of fall color on a drive along Highway 88 from Stockton, California to Carson City, Nevada. It was a beautiful, sunny day with lots of color foliage. I love to take this route in October of each year.

Mobius Arch Lone Pine

I took these five pictures of the Mobius Arch, Mt. Whitney, and Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California. On Highway 395 in Lone Pine turn west on Mt. Whitney Portal Street. Turn right on Movie Road and follow it to the end where you see a parking lot. There’s a sign at the parking lot that marks the short trail to Mobius Arch in the Alabama Hills. I used a Nikon D600 FX with a wide angle 20 mm lens. I am intrigued by the many rock formations in the Alabama Hills. It’s easy to understand why the location was used to film many television and movie westerns.

You can turn and go west on Highway 168 in Bishop, California. I took pictures at North Lake, Bishop Creek and Sabrina Lake. I used a Nikon D600 FX with a Nikkor 20 mm wide angle lens. The weather was cool but the fall colors were stunning.

I used a Nikon D600 FX with a Nikkor 50 mm 1.8 prime lens. Some aspens were at peak color while others were past peak. Still others were  green. Nice autumn day in the Eastern Sierra.

Here are some pictures I took of fall color in June Lake Loop Resort area last Wednesday, October 17. The aspens were at or near peak. It was my first stop on a trip from Stockton, CA, to Nevada Silver Trails. The last two pictures I took Sunday, October 21, of the same area but taken from HWY 120 east of US 395 on the return trip to Stockton. Wonderful autumn weather and beautiful color.

Sierra Fall Color

Highway 168 West from Bishop, CA, on Highway 395, takes you up into the Eastern Sierra to a region called Bishop Creek. It has several lakes at different elevations that gives you diverse views and perspectives of aspens turning color in the Eastern Sierra. Here are 9 pictures of fall color in the Eastern Sierra from North Lake, to Sabrina Lake, and to South Lake. The tenth and last picture is one of  June Lakes Loop, between Mammoth Lake and  Mono Lake, CA, along Highway 395. I used a Nikon D300s camera with a Nikon 18-200 mm DX lens. I always shoot digital images in raw format and then process them in Photoshop. I like the views on roads less traveled.

Bodie State Park, California

Took these pictures at Bodie State Park, California. It’s located off US Highway 395 between Lee Vining and Bridgeport, CA. I arrived early in the morning before crowds of tourists arrived and the weather was cool. So on an early summer morning, I was able to take pictures without a lot of people in the scenes. I used a Nikon D300s camera with Nikon wide angle lens DX 12-24 and a prime lens DX 35.
