I visited Staten Island Preserve for the third time this fall season. It’s located in the California’s Central Valley and is one of the Pacific Flyways. You learn from the Kiosk at the entrance that it’s wildlife friendly farming. So it’s mostly conservation farms and ranches there. Here are some pictures I took there.

Sunflowers Dixon, California
I took a few photographs of the sunflower fields being cultivated around Dixon, California. I noticed they all face in one direction: toward the sun. I guess they are enjoying the 14 hours and 48 minutes of the summer solstice. They’re are nature’s solar collectors. Brilliant colors. Sunflowers in bloom remind me of the song “On the sunny side of the street…”
Close Encounters on The Delta
Here are some more pictures that I took recently with the Panasonic G9 of wildlife and sunsets in the Staten Island Preserve. Staten Island Preserve is surrounded on three sides by levees. It’s located in the Sacramento River Delta Region. The nearest town is Walnut Grove, California. The distant mountain in the background is Mount Diablo. It’s another beautiful day in The Delta.
Last Leaves to Fall
From my balcony I took four pictures of the last remaining leaves to fall from the tree outside. It was cloudy so I was able to take these leaves with diffuse, soft lighting. I darken the background so allow the leaves to stand out.
Happy New Year 2018!
Rock Creek to UOP to Super Moon
Here are some pictures I took of Rock Creek as the sun was setting in the west. Then I waited for the appearance of the super moon on Sunday evening in the east. I was in a small farming valley in the foothills near Copperopolis, California. Monday evening I took some pictures of Burns Tower and the super moon on the campus of The University of the Pacific, Stockton, California. Awesome experience.
Zen Photography Class: Texture
Here are ten pictures that I submitted to my Zen Photography Class. The photography assignment was texture. I took pictures of raindrops, a poodle of water with reflections, cashews, peanuts, dark chocolate candy, part of an oil painting, etc. It was a delightful and challenging assignment. In the end, I got to taste the texture of the peanuts, the cashews and the dark chocolates. Delicious assignment. I might have another piece of chocolate.
Gold Country to Del Porto Canyon
Here are some pictures that recently I took on several day trips to the Gold Country in Northern California along Highway 49. I visited Historic Folsom, Volcano, Sutter Creek, Mekolumne River near Jackson, and finally a day trip to Del Porto Canyon. I used a Nikon D600 FX camera with Nikkor 50 mm lens and 20 mm lens. Great weather and beautiful blue skies.
America’s Cup Racers Dock Sailboats at the Marina
Here are some pictures that I took of America’s Cup Racers docking their sailboats for the night at the San Francisco Marina, California. I used a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3X camera. I converted the images to black and white in Photoshop. It was a fortunate happenstance for me to walk along the Marina as the racing boats sailed in to dock for the night.
Dillon Beach, California
Here are some pictures I took while walking along Dillon Beach located near the village of Bodega where Hitchcock’s “The Birds” film took place. The beach is located on the northern coast of Marin County, about 60 miles north of San Francisco. Take the Pacific Coastal Highway US 1 north of San Francisco and turn left in Tomales on the Dillon Beach Road. Beautiful beach scenery at the opening of Tomales Bay. Go off season on a weekday simply because you will find that there are fewer people on the beach and quite likely more sun.
Bucolic Calaveras County
After the recent rain storms in the Central Valley, I drove from Stockton east on Highway 4 toward Copperopolis. Instead of turning right toward Copperopolis, I turned left on Rock Creek Road. Here are four pictures of pastures along the way. I used a Nikon D300s with a Nikon 18 to 200 mm DX lens. As you can see the rocks go with the farm, the cows are contented and the wind pumps the water.
